Allen residents will go to the polls on Saturday, Oct. 8, to vote on a 13-cent increase in taxes. If passed, the Tax Ratification Election, will raise Allen ISD's maintenance and operations tax rate from $1.04 to $1.17 per $100 of property valuation. With the district's 50-cent debt service tax already in place, the final tax rate would be $1.67, the maximum tax rate allowed by law. On homes valued at $300,000, the increase would mean an additional $390 per year; a $400,000 home would incur a $520 increase.
The increase is being requested to generate an additional $10 million in response to education funding cuts approved in June by the Texas Legislature. An election for the tax increase is required because the district is already at the highest maintenance and operations tax rate allowed by the state without taking it to the voters. Early voting for the tax increase continues until Oct. 4.
